Italy impress and Bojang bags: FIFA U-20 World Cup, Matchday 1
We run though the eye-catching performers and prospects from the first round of group games in Argentina
The first round of group stage games at this FIFA U-20 World Cup didn’t disappoint. Last-minute winners, end-to-end games, outstanding performers, and not a single draw – we couldn’t ask for much more, really.
Jonathan Gómez’s brilliant goal at the death for the US got the tournament up and running. Argentina – who only got to this tournament by hosting it, assuming the responsibility from Indonesia – just about held off a competitive Uzbekistan side.
Perhaps the biggest result was Italy dismantling South American champions Brazil in the first 34 minutes of their highly-anticipated match-up, even if the eventual 3-2 scoreline looked tight. England, down a couple of important starters, made a solid if unspectacular start to their tournament with a comfortable 1-0 win against Tunisia.
