SCOUTED: Hello, Stephen Ganavas. Can you tell me why Mathis Amougou has been deemed worthy of The Shortlist?
STEPHEN GANAVAS: Mathis Amougou is on The Shortlist because he’s 18-years-old and has started the first three games of the season for AS Saint-Étienne, following their promotion to Ligue 1 last year.
He only played two matches during that promotion - one sub appearance in the league, one start in the cup - but we [SCOUTED] saw a lot of him absolutely dominating at youth international level and at the U-17 World Cup, and then again in the U-19 EURO’s this summer.
Since then, he’s catapulted himself into the first team at Saint-Étienne. They really need a player like him for what’s likely to be a tough season and a relegation battle; he’s the kind of player who, despite his age, could provide steel in the midfield and help them navigate the large amounts of defensive work they’re going to need doing.
