Youth international tournaments are a big shop window. They offer scouts a whistle-stop tour of talent, and the talent – especially from less-ventured regions – the chance to make an impression on a world stage.
From west Africa to central America, this summer’s U-20 World Cup, conquered by a robust Uruguay side, offered a host of breakthrough talents a place in the shop window.
Some of these players – like Kim Ji-soo and Adama Bojang – have shot onto scouting lists worldwide. Others, like Cesare Casadei, are already at top European clubs and unlikely to move.
Instead, we’ve picked out five lesser-known names that clubs should be keen to sign in the coming year, if not next couple of months. These are understated players that caught our eye without taking home the headlines - and we think they’re ready for transfers to develop their careers and improve the clubs smart enough to buy them.
