As the U-20 World Cup rumbles on relentlessly, the U-17 European Championship has quietly been and gone. We didn’t cover it in as much detail as we will next year, but by all accounts, it was another enjoyable and interesting tournament.
Germany are the champions. Remarkably, this is only the second time they’ve won the U-17 EURO, last doing so in 2009 with a group that included the likes of Mario Götze, Marc-André ter Stegen, Bernd Leno and Shkodran Mustafi. In stark contrast, the women’s teams have triumphed on five separate occasions since then.
All things considered, Germany were the worthy winners. They breezed through the group stage – winning three from three, scoring ten and conceding once – before doing what they needed to do in the knockout rounds, squeaking past Switzerland on penalties, going toe-to-toe with a rambunctious Poland side, then edging out reigning champions France in the final.
